My one hesitation is the record of reliability In Consumers Reports the A6 has a dismal reliability record and most of it seems to be related to the 3.0 supercharged engine. I was wondering if Audi acknowledges this and if they have taken any steps to rectify whatever it is that causes this engine to be unreliable.

There is no interval, they are supposed to last for life which is fine as long as that "life" doesn't exceede 120k miles ish, which most will. You can add turbo actuator failure to chains and manifolds ohh and the occasional crank damper.

There is always a cost to running a bigger engine, lower fuel consumption, more road tax, increased servicing costs ( an oil filter costs no more than a 2.0 TDI one but the car takes 7.5L of oil instead of 4.5L ) . But in the scheme of things I wouldn't classify these as mega costs.
